Committed to Environmental and Social Responsibility
We are committed to protecting the environment through the prevention of pollution and effective environmental management.
D&T Asphalt recognises the need to balance environmental and social responsibilities when conducting its business activities.
Our work complies with the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and Regulations 1987 and it is a goal of D&T Asphalt that the all works will be compliant with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
As such, we developed an Environmental Register to evaluate the broader impacts of our works on the environment and have put controls in place to prevent environmental harm.
Environmental Benefits
- Asphalt uses approximately 20% less energy to produce than other types of road surface materials
Old asphalt is often recycled to produce aggregate for new asphalt, which saves in the wastage of old materials and the production of new materials.
The porous nature of asphalt also allows the natural ingress of water into the soil. Trees that rely on water under the asphalt driveway are less likely to be put under stress compared to a concrete driveway.
- The smooth surface of asphalt helps to speed up travel, in turn reducing fuel consumption
- Petroleum from asphalt does not leach into the environment
Minimising Our Carbon Footprint
D&T Asphalt takes great concern in reducing and minimising the carbon footprint of our operations. That is why we:
- Avoid unnecessary running of fuel powered equipment and plant
- Ensure emissions controls are regularly checked
- Ensure maintenance schedules are implemented effectively
- When planning activities such as travel, purchasing equipment or using energy consuming products, the carbon footprint of such activities, plant or products is taken into account when making the decision. When there is an opportunity to choose a lower energy consuming option, with equal outcomes for safety and quality, this should be chosen to reduce the carbon footprint of the company
Asphalt Facts
- Asphalt is almost half the cost compared to concrete
- Asphalt repair costs are minimal but repairing concrete can be a major expense
- Asphalt is a finished product once laid
- Asphalt is a porous product This allows for better drainage and is less susceptible to cracking
- Unlike other types of road surface materials, asphalt can set quickly and be ready to sustain traffic in only a few hours. Other types of surfaces may take days or weeks to cure. This means that traffic is not held up for too long during repairs or when new roads are being built
